Ray Bootland Awarded Prestigious MSM Medal
The Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) is the highest award that can be granted to a Legion Member. Award is given with consideration of eleven criteria, including expertise that has enhanced the image of the Legion within the community




On Saturday 27 June 2020, Dwight Grieve, BC/Yukon Royal Canadian Legion Military, Veterans and Senior Chairman presents Comrade Raymond Bootland with the Meritorious Service Medal (MSM) Citation. Since the Malahat Legion opened in 1934, Ray is the fourth member to receive this award. He joins Norm Newbold, Dwight Grieve and Don Woolford.
Comrade Raymond (Ray) Bootland is a 39 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion. He joined the Langford branch 01-91 on his retirement from the Royal Canadian Navy. While in the Langford branch, Raymond served on council for 5 years as the sports chair.
In 1991, he transferred his membership to the Malahat Branch 01-134. He was awarded a Life Membership in 2014 for all his hard work and support of the Malahat Legion.
Despite an advancing disability Ray has remained very active in the Malahat Legion and the community through participation in the Young Seniors Active Group Society (YSAGS). This society is open to all community members and promotes social activities such as walking, line dancing, BBQ lunches group trips.
